Hair on average sheds between 50 to 100 hairs a day. When you are wearing protective hair styles such as braids, twist, updo’s etcetera, it is normal to see an excessive amount of hair shed once you take that style down. There is no need to be alarmed when this happens. You have been holding on to those shed hairs in the protective style.

However, when you are wearing your hair out and notice shedding , or experience excessive hair being shed in the shower, you need to figure out the culprit. Excessive hair shedding can come from medical illnesses such as alopecia, iron deficiencies and a variety of other health issues. If you suspect you may have one of these ailments, schedule an appointment as soon as possible with your physician. If you already know you don’t have a health issue related to your hair loss, it may be from one of the following reasons.

1. Stress can lead to hair loss

Stress can be a huge cause of hair loss. Hair loss due to stress is called Telogen Effluvium. When you are losing your hair due to stress it tends to come out in clumps. It is easy to say stop being stressed but  much harder to do. Try to get to the bottom of why you are actually stressed. Is it due to something you have control over?

Or do you have absolutely no control over what is causing you stress? There is a solution to both. If it is something you have control over, work every day at it a little at a time. Ask your friends, family, therapist, religious leader, etc for advice. Do things you love to do while in search of a solution.

There are few things in life that we have absolutely no control over. If you feel your stressor has no solution, then why are you stressed in the first place? If it is truly something that you can not fix and has no solution, then do not stress yourself out over something you can not change.

Instead, work on the things you can change and you do have control over. Give up that particular problem to your higher power and continue to enjoy your life to the best of your ability.

2. Poor diet choice can affect the hair

When your body is receiving all of the nutrients it needs, it is able to not only make sure the essential parts of your body are working properly (heart, brain, lungs), but it is also able to aid in hair and nail growth, as well as healthy skin.

When you are feeding your body junk in excess, not only can it cause your hair to appear dry and dull, it also can cause hair loss. Not receiving enough protein also can cause hair loss. Altering your diet to include more vitamins and minerals will assist your hair into growing, and you will experience less excessive shedding.

3. Excessive styling can cause hair damage

We love to play in our hair and with so many great hairstyles out there, it is hard not to. Excessive styling,  however, can cause hair loss so you want to be careful.

We know it is imperative to stay away from heat styling tools on a regular basis but you also want to avoid excessively braiding and unbraiding your hair or putting it in high manipulative styles often. The less manipulation, the less likely you are to receive excessive breakage, hair loss, and excessive shedding.

4.Lack of protective styling can lead to breakage

In the same breath, it is imperative to keep your hair protected to help prevent excessive shedding. If you constantly wear your hair out and don’t keep it well moisturized, your hair is going to become dry and brittle and eventually break off which can be in excess. Be sure that you are keeping your hair protected not only during the day but at night, by sleeping on a silk pillow case, or wearing a silk or satin bonnet.

5. Using the wrong products can cause breakage

All hair products are not created equal. Using shampoos and conditioners with sulfates and parabens can lead to the hair becoming dry and shedding. Look for products that are free of harmful chemicals and enriched with ingredients that will help moisturize and nourish the hair.

6. Heredity

Of course when it comes to heredity there is not as much that can be done to completely stop hair loss from happening, but there are options. When you notice your hair begins to shed more than normal contact your physician and let them know about your family history of hair loss. Your physician can let you know the options you have.

Remember, following these steps, as well as living an overall healthy lifestyle can help aid in the reduction of hair loss. Heredity is not the end all be all. You should still live a healthy lifestyle and watch how not only your hair but also your life flourishes.

Will you be following any of these steps to help reduce excessive hair loss?
