Many women and men suffer with dry locs. Dry locs can easily break, have a dull appearance, and feel brittle. Not to be mistaken with naturally dry hair. Some hair has a natural dry look to it, this does not mean that your hair is suffering from dryness. Dry locs are susceptible to excessive breakage, splitting and can’t be felt. Here are 8 tips that will keep you dry locs soft, supple, and moisturized.

1. Avoid Excessive Products

Typically when our hair is dry we believe that adding more product will do the trick to moisturize it. So we add product on top of product onto our hair until we feel it is adequately coated. By adding excessive product onto the hair, it is only further drying the hair and weighing it down, creating a mess of buildup! Instead, stick with a few staple products. Such as a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, and a leave in oil.

2.  Find Your Staple Products

Having staple products that you can use in your hair on a regular basis is extremely important when it comes to caring or your locs. Tgin’s Twist and Define Cream is perfect for twisting locs, and basic upkeep.   Our Moisture Rich Sulfate Free Shampoo and Triple Moisture Replenishing Conditioner  gently cleanses locs, and restores moisture. Argan Replenishing Hair and Body Serum is the perfect accessory for your bag to add moisture to thirsty locs throughout the day.

3. Drink Water

Drinking water is by far one of the best things you can do for your overall appearance and health. Drinking water helps keep skin and hair hydrated from within. Hair made up of 5% water and 95% protein.  In addition to keeping hair quenched water also helps increase hair growth.

5. Eat Plenty of Protein

Because hair is made up of 95% protein it is important to keep protein in your body! The loss of internal protein can make hair dry, brittle, and susceptible to breakage and hair loss. Foods such as Salmon, Kidney beans, black beans, and chick peas contain plenty of protein! You can also do monthly protein treatments to help add moisture back in the hair.

6. Avoid Excess Heat Styling

Some loc ladies still use heat styling tools such as curling wands and flat irons to add versatility to their look believing it will be less damaging because their hair is in locs. However, heat styling is still damaging to natural hair in general and cause excessive dryness, heat damage, and breakage. Opt for rollers, or twist-outs, braid-outs, and other non heat using styles to achieve similar looks.

7.  Sleep on with a Satin Bonnet or Pillow Case at Night

Sleeping with a satin pillow case or bonnet will help hair retain moisture that can sometimes be lost when tossing and turning a cotton pillow case. If your locs are long put your hair in a loose top bun and then apply your bonnet.

8. Clarify

Combining apple cider vinegar and baking soda makes one amazing clarifying wash! Here is a list of quite a few others clarifying treatments help remove excessive product buildup that can be overdrawing your lovely locs. If you experience excessive buildup try doing a clarifying cleanse at least once a month. Your hair will love it and feel much cleaner and softer after!
